The New Girl

by Jesse Q. Sutanto

Lia Setiawan has never really fit in. When she wins a full ride to the prestigious Draycott Academy on a track scholarship, she’s determined to make it work even though she’s never felt more out of place. But on her first day there she witnesses a girl being forcefully carried away by campus security. Her new schoolmates and teachers seem unfazed, but it leaves her unsure of what she’s gotten herself into. As she uncovers the secrets of Draycott, complete with a corrupt teacher, a golden boy who isn’t what he seems, and a blackmailer determined to get her thrown out, she’s not sure if she can trust anyone–especially when the threats against her take a deadly turn.

My Rate: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5

This book was very riveting, I couldn’t stop listening and thinking “what’s going to happen next?”, but it was also full of me shouting “DON’T DO THAT” up until the very end. There was not one down moment, we had surprise after surprise and you could never guess where the story was going next. So it was awesome in terms of writing. And in terms of subjects, this story brings up very important topics, that need to be talked about but rarely are.

  • Racism and classicism.

It was very eye-opening, being that I had never even imagined there was racism between Asian cultures. There is an amazing quote (that I could not find, since I listened to this and didn’t make any notes) where Lia talks about how the rest of the world doesn’t see the difference between different Asian cultures, and as a Brazilian, I’m very sad and disappointed to admit it’s true, I didn’t know anything about these cultures, much less the problems and racism between them.

  • Drug use, abuse, and sale between teenagers.
  • Bullying and cyberbullying
  • The pressure and desperation teens go through to get into colleges, and at such a young age
  • Homophobia

It was very satisfying to me, for a book to show that girls with different sexual orientations can be friends

  • Teacher and adult responsibility

One of the most impactful phrases in this book, to me, was Lia talking about how her teachers and principals were supposed to be there for these teens, to protect them, teach them, help them, but they were not doing that, their biggest concern was money and that is just honestly sad and revolting, however a very real fact.

So this book gives us space for lots of reflection while being incredibly entertaining, fun, sweet but very heavy most of the time.

Adjectives and general thoughts: A bit frustrating when the character does stupid things but is incredibly written, with deep subjects and an extremely riveting plot

Recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good thriller and a good YA book, is not afraid of some violence, and has no heart problems.

  • I know that some comments I make about decent guys on my posts are the bare minimum a guy should do, so no, they don’t deserve to be treated like gods for doing the minimum, but at the same time, I’ve read a lot of sexist books and I appreciate authors who make characters that can serve as role models and examples of how a decent guy acts and what a loving and respectful relationship looks like. I believe we should always encourage these authors and bring attention to the ones that still write sexist characters and stories.
  • I make a lot of comments about sexism and healthy role models in books, but a lot of times these characteristics don’t make the book a bad book and definitely don’t make the author a bad author. Please never shame these authors and these books for these comments, I simply feel that we need to have awareness of the less than ideal situations some books bring us, and not use the romanticized problem as examples of what a relationship should be. Most of these authors are still amazing, and the content they write doesn’t reflect directly with their personal views and opinions. Always make sure to respect and be kind to everyone, even while criticizing their content.

The Guest Room

by Rona Halsall

You think you’re safe in your home. You’re wrong.
Ever since Steph’s husband walked out after a thirty-year marriage, home hasn’t felt like a safe haven. Her daughter Bea thinks she’s imagining things. But Steph knows that the noises in the night, the open windows she knows she left closed, the strange smell in the kitchen – none of it feels right.
Then her house is broken into, and a young man named Noah helps her fix the front window. He’s fallen on hard times and Steph impulsively offers him a place to stay. At least if he is there, she won’t be home alone.
Before long Noah is living in Bea’s old bedroom, paying rent, and getting his life back on track. Steph’s ex-husband and Bea are furious. But Steph feels secure at last.
Until the strange things start happening once more.
Until it becomes clear someone will stop at nothing to make her never, ever feel safe again.
The most twisty and unputdownable thriller of the year – perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Mark Edwards and Gone Girl.

My Rate: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5

This book has an interesting premise, however, it was a bit slow on the delivery. For me, a really good thriller is a book where everything happens for a reason and when the plot twist happens, everything clicks and everything makes sense. However here this didn’t happen. It felt like the author just filled the first 70% of the book with random characters, situations, and flashbacks to give us other suspects but most of it was a bit unnecessary and only slowed the story down for me. The ending was good, the plot twist was not as surprising as I wished it was, because I was thinking of that person for a good portion of the book, but the ending was enjoyable and with a really good motivation. The narration was one of the best I’ve ever heard, the characters’ voices were amazing and it set an amazing mood.

Adjectives and general thoughts: A bit slow and not so “tight” but in the end enjoyable.

Recommend this to people who like deep character development and a nice psychological ending

Josh and Gemma Make a Baby by Sarah Ready – Review

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!!

This post may contain affiliate links for products and services I recommend. If you make a purchase through these links, at no additional cost to you, I will earn a small commission.

Hello sassy people! Today’s post is about my newest favorite book: Josh and Gemma Make a Baby by Sarah Ready! Thank you, Sarah and NetGalley for this advance copy in exchange for an honest review!

One of the cutest, most heartfelt books I’ve ever read. This managed to give me everything I wanted while, at the same time surpassing all my expectations, and I had high expectations.

Escaping Christmas by Marie Landry

Josh and Gemma Make a Baby

by Sarah Ready

New Year’s Resolution:
Have a baby
Preferably with Josh Lewenthal
Meet Gemma Jacobs. She’s driven, energetic, and a positive thinker. She has a great career working for famed self-help guru Ian Fortune, she lives in a cute studio apartment in Manhattan, and her family is supportive and loving (albeit a little kooky). Her life is perfect. Absolutely wonderful.
Except for one tiny little thing.
After a decade of disastrous relationships and an infertility diagnosis, Gemma doesn’t want a Mr. Right (or even a Mr. Right Now), she just wants a baby.
And all she needs is an egg, some sperm, and IVF.
So Gemma makes a New Year’s resolution: have a baby.
Josh Lewenthal is a laid back, relaxed, find-the-humor-in-life kind of guy. The polar opposite of Gemma. He’s also her brother’s best friend. For the past twenty years Josh has attended every Jacobs’ family birthday, holiday, and event – he’s always around.
Gemma knows him. He’s nice (enough), he’s funny (-ish), he’s healthy (she thinks) and he didn’t burn any ants with a magnifying glass as a kid. Which, in Gemma’s mind, makes him the perfect option for a sperm donor.
So Gemma wants to make a deal. An unemotional, businesslike arrangement. No commitments, just a baby.
To Gemma’s surprise, Josh agrees.
They have nothing in common, except their agreement to make a baby and their desire to keep things businesslike.
But the thing about baby-making…it’s hard to keep it businesslike, it’s nearly impossible to keep it unemotional, and it’s definitely impossible to keep your heart out of the mix. Because when you’re making a baby together, things have a way of starting to feel like you’re making other things too – like a life, and a family, and love. And when the baby-making ends, you wish that everything else didn’t have to end too.

Gemma is going to have to face many things in her journey on baby-making, including standing up for herself, learning to not judge and make preconceived opinions about people, and loving herself the way she is, she learns a lot about love and positivity, even when life is not a sea of roses.

My Rate: 5/5

I have to say, this was my first book by Sarah Ready and Oh my God, I think I found a new favorite author. This book was AMAZING. It made me laugh, made me cry, made me swoon and be mad, I had all the feelings! But in an extraordinary way. Some books make you cry and leave you in a fetal position on the floor, but this book is not like that, it shows you the hard realities of life, but it builds you up again, it gives you hope again, and when you finish it, there are only good feelings.

One thing I did miss was Josh’s POV, I would love to have his POV, but I also understand the author’s choice, and it worked really well. Being in Gemma’s read was incredibly interesting, and it was so real, she had a complex mind, and I believe many people, myself included, might have related to her a lot. This book was deep but soooo sweet, it handled heavy topics, but in a funny and light way, and I honestly think this would give an amazing movie, I kept thinking about this during the book.

Feminist rate: 5/5

This book deserves 11 stars! This is the kind of book I’ve been saying is necessary. This is a prime example of one of the jobs of the romance genre, sharing, in deep, heartbreaking detail, a struggle so many women go through, but nobody talks about it. It shows us all the parts, the good and happy parts, the funny parts, the uncomfortable parts, the bad and sad parts. This is a book that teaches us so much, empathy, respect, friendship, and especially love, not only romantic love, all kinds of love. Infertility is an experience I hope to never have, however after reading this book I believe I understand at least 1% better what these women go through, I believe I felt 0,0000001% of the pain they do and experience some of the happiness by the end too.

And I loved that I was not only about infertility, Gemma and Josh are complex characters, with many issues to work through like self-acceptance, body shaming, past traumas, grief, prejudice, toxic positivity, feminism, and the “role” of the “modern woman” in society, what a normal family is, so many important subjects are handled here, with so much care, it’s incredible (and just a small note, this book unleashed a huge argument in my house about traditional families, religion and God’s wishes, which was, to me, a great reaffirming opportunity)

To me, this is the greatest thing about romance, we get to feel pain, fear, and loss, but there is the promise of a happy ending. This is a safe space to feel all these emotions, and at the end of this book, I only felt happy and refreshed. I think I’m rambling too much, but this is also something this book does to you, makes you think about life.

Anyway, loved it, it is one of the best books I’ve ever read, will forever have a special place in my heart and my recommendations and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

Recommend this to Anyone who is not afraid to cry, laugh, and swoon all at the same time, who is willing to learn and reflect on life. Also, anyone who loved All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover, the themes are similar, but the books are different in their writing, their mood, but not the lessons they teach, but you won’t be destroyed at the end of this book as it happens to me at the end of every Colleen Hoover book.

Hello sassy people! Today’s post is about this incredible book I was honored to review as an ARC: Make Me Dream by Dillon Bancroft! Thank you, Dillon and RMWB Tours for this advance copy in exchange for an honest review!

This book is NOT for everyone, and that is okay, we all have our limits, but in my opinion, it’s an incredibly important work that this author did here. This book is an example of one of the major roles of romance books, telling the world about the realities so many women go through. The amount of knowledge and life lessons, empathy lessons, and eye-opening moments that this book has is outstanding.

Escaping Christmas by Marie Landry

Make Me Dream

by Dillon Bancroft

Aria
They say snitches get stitches. Except I got all the stitches before I ever thought about trying to snitch. My abusive ex-boyfriend, one of the most powerful men in the country, is on the hunt for my silence. He’ll stop at nothing to make sure I’m six feet under for ratting him out to the FBI.
To make matters worse, I’m pregnant . . . with his baby. So why do I want to fall in bed with the sexy veterinarian who lives two doors down from me on the family farm? I can’t resist starting a no-strings attachment with the hot, single dad who doesn’t do forever. But it can’t be more than that. I’m on borrowed time. Forever will get us both killed.
Derek
The prodigal daughter returns to Sage Creek and I want to send her anywhere but here. I don’t need her brand of drama lurking around. Especially when I have a daughter I’m fighting to get sole custody of. But when my brother from another mother becomes her witness protection and brings her to the farm I work at, I’m forced to help keep Aria safe.
Her past is messy, and it most certainly gives me a headache I wasn’t looking for. I don’t do promises and happily ever afters. So why am I considering giving everything and more to Aria McKenzie when she strolls back into the barns of Sage Creek with a black eye, battered and broken?

From the very first paragraph, this book hooked me. It has very heavy and insightful moments, that are balanced by moments full of action and thrill. This is the type of book I love, the ones that dive deep into heavy and difficult subjects, show us things we would never see. This is the type of book I’m more than proud of saying I read and I believe these types of books are necessary to report the reality and the horrific things women, all over the world, go through every single day. I loved the writing that kept me hooked until the very last moment, I love the balance between insightful, thrilling, sweet, hopeful and, to be honest, shocking moments. This is an author that I will definitely read more from.

And if there was a 6 I would give it. This is the type of book we need more of. It treats several heavy and important topics, shows us the inside workings of the mind of someone who was tortured by the person who was supposed to take care of them, shows that the torture doesn’t end when they leave their abuser, shows the deep scars, not only physical but mental and emotional that these women will have for the rest of their lives, shows how real and healthy relationships work, showed the difficult choice of maintaining or not, not only an unplanned pregnancy but a traumatizing one. There is so much here and I loved every second. I have a special place in my heart for books that show the healing of abuse survivors. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing someone survive, heal, learn to love again, trust again, and build their life, stronger than ever. It only serves to show the strength of these people. I made a small list of topics I loved, that this author touched on very carefully and beautifully:

  • mental health
  • abortion (and abortion laws)
  • consent
  • Healthy communication about sex, setting boundaries and limits (and this should happen in any relationship, not only with people who were assaulted)
  • After care
  • Healthy relationship role models
  • Enthusiastic consent
  • PTSD
  • The inactivity of people surrounding these victims (How people, like neighbors, didn’t help her)
  • Women rivalry
  • Therapy
  • Sexism
  • The power imbalance is toxic relationships
  • How to respect people and their traumas
  • The power of women who help other women
  • The incapacity of law enforcement to keep the abuser away from their victims

And so much more. I needed to make this list, because this is just 10% of the reflections this book created in my mind, and I hope it does the same with everyone that reads it.

Adjectives and general thoughts: Deep, Heavy but so important and so well done, it hooked me from page one.

Recommend this to People who have no triggers, because this is a heavy read. I recommend this book to anyone who cares about women, anyone who wants to understand this issue better, understand the signs, the things we can do, and also understand them and just a small fraction of everything they went through.

If you want to buy this book, it is now live on Amazon. You can also add it to your shelf on Goodreads and see what other people thought about it!

Well, that is all for today, I hope you like this post, hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Feel free to leave your opinion about it in the comments and I will see you next time!

Bye sassy people!

Cream and Punishment by Susannah Nix – Review

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!!

Hello sassy people! Today’s post is a review of Cream and Punishment, the brand new release from Susannah Nix in the King Family series. Thank you, Susannah Nix for providing this copy in exchange for an honest review.

This was a delicious read and honestly surprising in how amazing it was! I believe I have one more author to add to my favorites list.

Escaping Christmas by Marie Landry

Cream and Punishment

(King Family #2)

by Susannah Nix

She’s not just my ex-girlfriend. She’s my new coworker.
I knew Lucy Dillard was The One the first time I met her. Yes, I’m enough of a sap to believe in love at first sight. When I fell for Lucy, I fell hard. Everything was great between us—until the moment she dumped me.
Now I just want to forget about her. Instead, I’m stuck staring at her face all day. But I need this job, so I’ll find a way to be civil and professional.
There’s just one small problem: I’m nowhere close to being over her.
First, we were lovers. Then enemies. Now we’re trying to be friends.
I didn’t set out to break Tanner King’s heart, but you know what they say about the road to hell.
I’ve got too many responsibilities and no room in my life for love. I can deal with Tanner’s resentment until he starts working at the desk directly across from mine. Obviously, a truce of some kind is required. We’re both grownups. We can handle this situation like professionals.
There’s only one thing threatening this fragile peace we’ve negotiated: all these inconvenient feelings I apparently still have for him.
Cream and Punishment is book #2 in the King Family series set in the small town of Crowder, Texas, home of the King’s Creamery ice cream company. Each book is a standalone, full-length contemporary romance that follows one of the six King siblings as they find and fight for love.

Genre: Romance, ARC

TRIGGER WARNINGS (Based on StoryGraphs): Death of a parent, Emotional Abuse, Gaslighting, Mental illness, Toxic relationship

Main characters: Lucy and Tanner

Main conflict: Both characters have personal issues, related to their families, their childhoods, and how it affected their adulthood, and both of them have to work through and overcome a lot of things to be happy, individually and as a couple.

Hero: Book boyfriend, Cinnamon Roll Hero

Plot or character-driven: Character Driven

P.O.V.: Double P.O.V.

Character development: Deep

Diverse Cast: Nope

Read in: 2022

My Rate: 5/5 (The writing in this book is amazing, the visuals the author creates (at least in my head) were funny and just incredible. She approaches very deep and sensitive topics, in a light and fun way, but without taking away the heaviness and seriousness of them. I have to say, I saw myself in a lot of moments with these characters and their experiences and it was a huge reason why I loved this book so much, I felt seen and understood in a lot of moments, even when it wasn’t a personal experience, we are always able to understand the characters reasons, motivations, pains, and emotions. This is a book about self-development, these characters were not working only to make their relationship work, but also to make their individual lives better and that to me is just precious.)

Feminist rate: 5/5 (This book was very political and very feminist in subtle ways, but it abdicated for so many causes that I love, so I couldn’t be happier about a book.

The whole scene with the menstrual cup was one of my favorite scenes ever, not only because it inserted the use of menstrual cups as a normal, day-to-day thing (which I appreciate) but it also allowed the hero to show his amazingness. We have small phrases or actions that show the character’s positions about so many things, mentions of mansplaining, global warming, fascist movements…

And last but absolutely not least, the lessons in how a healthy relationship should work, about partnership and communication. This was just delightful.)

Adjectives and general thoughts: Feminist, sweep, delicious and fun

Recommend this to people who love a soft cinnamon roll hero, a heroine who has reservations but has a long and amazing journey, and a bunch of amazing secondary characters. (Also, if you like to suffer, because I hope this series covers all the brothers, and I need all the books now!!! But don’t worry, this is not a cliffhanger)

This book was delightful, fun, conscious, deep, interesting, and sweet. Both characters have very hard life experiences and they have to deal with them, this is a book about personal growth, about relationships, but not only romantic ones, relationships with parents, siblings, friends, coworkers, and with ourselves. This book made me feel seen and understood and gave me hope about relationships in every form. This was funny, witty, full of personality and opinions, all of which I love and want more. I believe a great part of my favorite aspects come from the author’s way of writing and her subtle way of putting political views, worldwide problems, deep discussions, and approaching meaningful and important topics. I will definitely read all the other books in this series and also anything from this author.

Put Me in Detention by Meghan Quinn – Review

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!!

Hello sassy people! Today’s post is a review of Put Me in Detention, the brand new release from Meghan Quinn. Thank you, Meghan Quinn and Candi Kane PR for providing this copy in exchange for an honest review.

Funny, sweet, steamy, and at the same time deep. 🥵🥵🥵🥵 I did not expect this book to be this hot! Oh my God! So delicious!

Escaping Christmas by Marie Landry

Put Me in Detention

by Meghan Quinn

“You got married on your divorce-cation?”

That would unfortunately be correct.

I was hanging with the girls, celebrating my divorce when I saw him, my crush, sitting in the corner of the bar all alone. Being single and looking for a wild night, I asked him if he wanted to join me. To my delight, he said yes.

Drinks were consumed, fun was had and then . . . one drunken conversation with a cranky gondolier in Las Vegas led to an Uber lift through a drive-thru wedding chapel with the incredibly hot, British bad boy, Pike Greyson.

On paper, it seemed like I hit the jackpot. And if I wasn’t fresh from a toxic marriage, I would have absolutely noticed the finer things about him.

But I wanted nothing to do with being married, so when I arrived back home from my eventful weekend in Vegas, the last thing I expected to see was a new doting husband already moved in.

I asked for an annulment, he pulled a Ross Geller and said no.

That’s right, he said NO! Instead, he asked for three months to prove we could be good together.

Insanity clearly knocked him in the head and the only way I could convince him to give up on our sham of a marriage was to show him just how wrong we were for each other. Only problem with that was, he saw right through my every prank, every trick, and every yearning emotion I attempted to mask.

Genre: Romance, ARC

Year: 2022

Goodreads rate: 4,45

Tropes: Drunk in Vegas Romance, Married in Vegas Romance, Rom-Com, Tattooed hero, Teacher in romance, Victim of a past abusive relationship

Smut factor: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)

TRIGGER WARNINGS (Based on StoryGraphs): Emotional Abuse, Infidelity, Sexual Content, Suicide attempt, Toxic relationship

Main characters: Cora and Pike

Main conflict: A lie told at the very beginning.

Pacing: Medium

Mood: Delicious, Fun, Hilarious, Sweet

Hero: Book boyfriend, Delicious 🥵, Sarcastic, Sturn Brunch Daddy

Plot or character-driven: Character Driven

P.O.V.: Double P.O.V.

Character development: Deep

Diverse Cast: Nope

Read in: 2022

My Rate: 4/5 (This was a very fun read, like most of Meghan Quinn’s works. We have two people who separately are already fun and sweet and interesting, but them together is just “chef’s kiss”. From a plot standpoint, I believe 80% of this book was a bit predictable. We knew the conflict, we knew what was gonna cause the whole fight at the end of the book, so I believe it could have been a bit more “original”, I kept waiting for a plot twist, but it never came. However the last 20% of the book was a complete surprise, an entirely new thing and I loved that part, and all the groveling, so, in my opinion, it saved the book (from a plot standpoint). I also want to point out that I didn’t see the need for both of these characters revealing at 60% that they are both millionaires, it honestly felt unrealistic and forced.)

Feminist rate: 4/5 (We have a strong woman, who is in search of her independence and her own life, without a man, and I’m all for that, she is a survivor of many things, depression, suicidal toughs and attempts, abusive relationships, that were not only with her husband, but other members of her family, so the fact that she is so fun and positive most of the time is amazing. And we have the almost perfect man, he is respectful, he is sweet, he is grateful for the things she does for him, and for the most part, he doesn’t seem to be affected by toxic masculinity (the vibrator talk), which is just amazing. However, I would have appreciated some distance time between these two characters, like I said before, I love that Cora wants her independence and wants to find out who she is outside of a relationship, and she doesn’t do that, so I would have loved to see her work on herself before going back to Pike. However, I love all the banter e “pranks” and their dynamic is just the best. And last but not least, I love his friendship with Keiko, I love that his best friend is a woman and we don’t have jealousy or any problems there)

Recommend this to people who love a rom-com, with lots of steam and a good Stern Brunch Daddy hero

This book was funny, sweet, and steamy, it had deep moments, it approached heavy topics, but with lightness and humor, while also giving a great role model and great examples of how healthy relationships (should) work (without the lying part). It was a mix of all my favorite things, deep character development, great secondary characters, lots of steam, lots of humor, and lots of fun. It was a bit predictable, but despite that, it was a very enjoyable read and I recommend it to anyone who loves romance, romcoms, sweet heroes, and strong heroines.
