Hello sassy people! Today I’m going to tell you guys about all the books I read in January! It was a month full of amazing ARCs, new authors, and a lot of 5 ⭐ books!

Brutal Prince

(Brutal Birthright #1)

by Sophie Lark

He’s No Prince Charming…
Callum Griffin is the heir to the Irish Mafia. He’s ruthless, arrogant, and he wants to kill me.
We got off on the wrong foot when I set a (very small) fire in his house.
Our families believe a marriage pact is the only thing that will prevent all-out warfare.
I think I might need to murder him while he sleeps.
This would all be a lot easier if Callum wasn’t so damned good-looking.
But I’ve got a lockbox around my heart. Because even if I’m forced to marry him…
I could never love a brutal prince.

𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: Mafia Romance, Arranged Marriage, Enemies to Lovers, Political Romance, and Curvy heroine.
𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)

Stolen Heir

(Brutal Birthright #2)

by Sophie Lark

They Murdered My Father, So I Stole Their Daughter…
She’s my captive, my little ballerina who dances only for me.
Nessa is sweet and innocent. She doesn’t deserve any of this. But that’s how our world works – the wolves eat the lambs, no matter how gentle they may be.
I’ll use her to get my revenge. Unless I give in to my hunger first…

𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: Mafia Romance, Ballerina, Grumpy and Sunshine, Irish mafia, Kidnapping Romance, Mafia Romance, Polish mafia, Redemption story, Stockholm Syndrome Romance, Tattooed hero
𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)

𝐌𝐲 Equality 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 (Love the consent, even though is a mafia and kidnapping romance.)

Savage Lover

(Brutal Birthright #3)

by Sophie Lark

There’s A Reason I Never Go To Parties…
I saw him in a cloud of smoke, like sin made flesh. Even bruised and battered, I’d never seen anything more beautiful…
Unless I hate myself, I should stay far away from Nero.
He’s a heartbreaker.
A mess-maker.
A walking disaster.
Here’s the problem: I’m in deep trouble with a dirty cop. The only person who can save me is Nero. We’re not friends. If he saw me drowning, he’d throw me an anchor.
But he’s the only chance I’ve got.
He’s no hero, he’s a Savage Lover.

𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: Mafia Romance, Woman mechanic
𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)
𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 (Loved the action plot and the relationship between the main characters!
𝐌𝐲 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 (Overall neutral, but it gets a point for having a female mechanic)

Put Me in Detention

by Meghan Quinn

“You got married on your divorce-cation?”
That would unfortunately be correct.
I was hanging with the girls, celebrating my divorce when I saw him, my crush, sitting in the corner of the bar all alone. Being single and looking for a wild night, I asked him if he wanted to join me. To my delight, he said yes.
Drinks were consumed, fun was had and then . . . one drunken conversation with a cranky gondolier in Las Vegas led to an Uber lift through a drive-thru wedding chapel with the incredibly hot, British bad boy, Pike Greyson.
On paper, it seemed like I hit the jackpot. And if I wasn’t fresh from a toxic marriage, I would have absolutely noticed the finer things about him.
But I wanted nothing to do with being married, so when I arrived back home from my eventful weekend in Vegas, the last thing I expected to see was a new doting husband already moved in.
I asked for an annulment, he pulled a Ross Geller and said no.
That’s right, he said NO! Instead, he asked for three months to prove we could be good together.
Insanity clearly knocked him in the head and the only way I could convince him to give up on our sham of a marriage was to show him just how wrong we were for each other. Only problem with that was, he saw right through my every prank, every trick, and every yearning emotion I attempted to mask.

𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: Drunk in Vegas Romance, Married in Vegas Romance, Rom-Com, Tattooed hero, Teacher in romance, Victim of a past abusive relationship
𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)
𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐬: Emotional Abuse, Infidelity, Sexual Content, Suicide attempt, Toxic relationship
𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 (Fun, sweet, steamy but a bit predictable)
𝐌𝐲 Equality 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 (Strong heroine, sweet and amazing hero (Sturn Brunch Daddy hero) but I wanted to see more of the heroine’s journey outside of the relationship)

Cream and Punishment

(King Family #2)

by Susannah Nix

She’s not just my ex-girlfriend. She’s my new coworker.
I knew Lucy Dillard was The One the first time I met her. Yes, I’m enough of a sap to believe in love at first sight. When I fell for Lucy, I fell hard. Everything was great between us—until the moment she dumped me.
Now I just want to forget about her. Instead, I’m stuck staring at her face all day. But I need this job, so I’ll find a way to be civil and professional.
There’s just one small problem: I’m nowhere close to being over her.
First, we were lovers. Then enemies. Now we’re trying to be friends.
I didn’t set out to break Tanner King’s heart, but you know what they say about the road to hell.
I’ve got too many responsibilities and no room in my life for love. I can deal with Tanner’s resentment until he starts working at the desk directly across from mine. Obviously, a truce of some kind is required. We’re both grownups. We can handle this situation like professionals.
There’s only one thing threatening this fragile peace we’ve negotiated: all these inconvenient feelings I apparently still have for him.

𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: Rom-Com, Romance Family, Second chance romance, Small Town Romance, Workplace romance
𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)
𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐬: Death of a parent, Emotional Abuse, Gaslighting, Mental illness, Toxic relationship
𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 (Deep and fun, sweet and delicious)
𝐌𝐲 Equality 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 (Feminist to the core, brings up, in a subtle way, very meaningful and important subjects)

Make Me Dream

by Dillon Bancroft

Aria
They say snitches get stitches. Except I got all the stitches before I ever thought about trying to snitch. My abusive ex-boyfriend, one of the most powerful men in the country, is on the hunt for my silence. He’ll stop at nothing to make sure I’m six feet under for ratting him out to the FBI.
To make matters worse, I’m pregnant . . . with his baby. So why do I want to fall in bed with the sexy veterinarian who lives two doors down from me on the family farm? I can’t resist starting a no-strings attachment with the hot, single dad who doesn’t do forever. But it can’t be more than that. I’m on borrowed time. Forever will get us both killed.
Derek
The prodigal daughter returns to Sage Creek and I want to send her anywhere but here. I don’t need her brand of drama lurking around. Especially when I have a daughter I’m fighting to get sole custody of. But when my brother from another mother becomes her witness protection and brings her to the farm I work at, I’m forced to help keep Aria safe.
Her past is messy, and it most certainly gives me a headache I wasn’t looking for. I don’t do promises and happily ever afters. So why am I considering giving everything and more to Aria McKenzie when she strolls back into the barns of Sage Creek with a black eye, battered and broken?

𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: Military Romance, Rape victim, Single Parent, Small Town Romance, Victim of domestic violence, Victim of a past abusive relationship
𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)
𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐬: Confinement, Domestic Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Gaslighting, Gun violence, Kidnapping, Mental illness, Murder, Panic attacks/disorders, Physical Abuse, Pregnancy, Rape, Sexual Assault, Sexual Content, Sexual harassment, Sexual violence, Suicide attempt, Torture, Toxic relationship, Violence, Medical content
𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 (Amazing writing, deep, thrilling, hooked me from page one)
𝐌𝐲 Equality 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 (This is the type of book we need more of. It treats several heavy and important topics. I recommend this to people who have no triggers because this is a heavy read. I recommend this book to anyone who cares about women, anyone who wants to understand this issue better, understand the signs, the things we can do, and also understand them and just a small fraction of everything they went through. )

Josh and Gemma Make a Baby

by Sarah Ready

New Year’s Resolution:
Have a baby
Preferably with Josh Lewenthal
Meet Gemma Jacobs. She’s driven, energetic, and a positive thinker. She has a great career working for famed self-help guru Ian Fortune, she lives in a cute studio apartment in Manhattan, and her family is supportive and loving (albeit a little kooky). Her life is perfect. Absolutely wonderful.
Except for one tiny little thing.
After a decade of disastrous relationships and an infertility diagnosis, Gemma doesn’t want a Mr. Right (or even a Mr. Right Now), she just wants a baby.
And all she needs is an egg, some sperm, and IVF.
So Gemma makes a New Year’s resolution: have a baby.
Josh Lewenthal is a laid back, relaxed, find-the-humor-in-life kind of guy. The polar opposite of Gemma. He’s also her brother’s best friend. For the past twenty years Josh has attended every Jacobs’ family birthday, holiday, and event – he’s always around.
Gemma knows him. He’s nice (enough), he’s funny (-ish), he’s healthy (she thinks) and he didn’t burn any ants with a magnifying glass as a kid. Which, in Gemma’s mind, makes him the perfect option for a sperm donor.
So Gemma wants to make a deal. An unemotional, businesslike arrangement. No commitments, just a baby.
To Gemma’s surprise, Josh agrees.
They have nothing in common, except their agreement to make a baby and their desire to keep things businesslike.
But the thing about baby-making…it’s hard to keep it businesslike, it’s nearly impossible to keep it unemotional, and it’s definitely impossible to keep your heart out of the mix. Because when you’re making a baby together, things have a way of starting to feel like you’re making other things too – like a life, and a family, and love. And when the baby-making ends, you wish that everything else didn’t have to end too.

𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: Brother’s best friend, Infertility, Pregnant, Small Town Romance
𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)
𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐬: Emotional Abuse, Fatphobia, Grief, Infertility, Infidelity, Medical content, Miscarriage, Pregnancy, Sexual Content
𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 (It made me laugh, made me cry, made me swoon and be mad, I had all the feelings!)
𝐌𝐲 Equality 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 (This is a prime example of one of the jobs of the romance genre, sharing, in deep, heartbreaking detail, a struggle so many women go through)

Lockdown on London Lane

by Beth Reekles

For the inhabitants of London Lane, a simple slip of paper underneath each of their doors is about to change their lives in a hundred different ways.
URGENT!!! Due to the current situation, building management has decided to impose a seven-day quarantine on all apartment buildings on London Lane.
With nowhere else to go . . .
Ethan and Charlotte wonder whether absence really does make the heart grow fonder when they end up on either side of a locked door.
A fierce debate over pineapple on pizza ignites a series of revelations about Zach and Serena’s four-year relationship.
Liv realizes rolling with the punches is sometimes much harder than it looks after her bridesmaids’ party goes off the rails, leaving the group at each other’s throats.
Isla and Danny’s new romance is put to the test as they jump ten steps ahead on the relationship timeline.
And Imogen and Nate’s one-night stand is about to get six do-overs they never really asked for—not awkward at all.
Through make ups, breakups, love-ins, and blowouts, friendships are tested as everyone scrambles to make it through the week unscathed. Amidst all the drama, one thing remains constant: life is full of surprises.

𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: COVID Quarantine Romance, Interracial couple, One-night stand, Relationship in trouble
𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 2/5 closed-door (kissing and sex is implied)
𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐬: Alcohol, Outing
𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 (This was extremely funny and entertaining while also giving me plenty of food for thought, which makes this the best kind of book for me.)
𝐌𝐲 Equality 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 (This book is almost a study of human relationships, also, this was a very diverse cast and I loved that!)

Group Therapy

by B.B. Easton

I am thiiiiis close to finally becoming a full-fledged psychologist. PhD? Check. Prestigious postdoc position, providing therapy to entitled millionaires and C-list celebrities whose pumpkin spice lattes cost more than my Converse and make excellent projectiles during their reality TV–worthy tantrums? Check. Letter of recommendation from my velociraptor-like supervisor?
That’s going to take a miracle. Not only because my boss said I have to cure our most-prized client’s writer’s block in time for him to meet his insane deadline, but also because that client just so happens to be …
Thomas F*@%ing O’Reardon.
Yeah, that Thomas O’Reardon. The wickedly brilliant, achingly beautiful, devastatingly British best-selling author whose psychological thrillers line my bookshelf at home and whose face I might or might not picture while I … you get the point. Sitting in a confined space with him; inhaling the crisp, clean scent of his cologne; gazing into his broody blue eyes while trying to remember to nod and listen and come up with suggestions that don’t involve taking our clothes off … it’s torture.
So, when Thomas casually asks me out at the end of a therapy session, I’m forced to make an impossible choice: say yes and risk losing my dream job, or say no and risk losing my dream guy. In a panic, I blurt out a third option—the only solution I can think of that will allow me to see this man after hours without it being considered a career-ending ethics violation:
Group therapy.
The only problem? I’ve never actually done group therapy. And side problem: my other clients are heathens. But what’s the worst that could happen? I mean, it’s not like I’m going to lose all control of the group and let it devolve into a chaotic, bloodthirsty, topless fight club.
Right?

𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: Forbidden relationship, Psychologist-client, Rom-Com
𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)
𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐬: No content Warnings According to StoryGraph
𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 (this book manages to use heavy subjects lightly, using humor to talk about very important things)
𝐌𝐲 Equality 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 (this can not be used as an example of what therapy is like, however, I do believe that this book brings a lot of very useful advice and insight to mental health in a very fun and entertaining way)

The Guest Room

by Rona Halsall

You think you’re safe in your home. You’re wrong.
Ever since Steph’s husband walked out after a thirty-year marriage, home hasn’t felt like a safe haven. Her daughter Bea thinks she’s imagining things. But Steph knows that the noises in the night, the open windows she knows she left closed, the strange smell in the kitchen – none of it feels right.
Then her house is broken into, and a young man named Noah helps her fix the front window. He’s fallen on hard times and Steph impulsively offers him a place to stay. At least if he is there, she won’t be home alone.
Before long Noah is living in Bea’s old bedroom, paying rent, and getting his life back on track. Steph’s ex-husband and Bea are furious. But Steph feels secure at last.
Until the strange things start happening once more.
Until it becomes clear someone will stop at nothing to make her never, ever feel safe again.

𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐞: Thriller
𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐬: Bullying, Drug use, Fire/Fire injury, Gaslighting, Toxic relationship
𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 This book has an interesting premise, however, it was a bit slow on the delivery. It felt like the author just filled the first 70% of the book with random characters, situations, and flashbacks to give us other suspects but most of it was a bit unnecessary and only slowed the story down for me. The ending was good, the plot twist was not as surprising as I wished it was, but the ending was enjoyable and with a really good motivation. The narration was one of the best I’ve ever heard!

Lessons in Corruption

(The Fallen Men #1)

by Giana Darling

He was eighteen.
The heir to a notorious, criminal MC.

𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)

Check for TW!

𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 (These are tropes I love  with amazing writing)
𝐌𝐲 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 (There are some rigid gender roles in here, because of the MC culture and the Female main character, sometimes, has some toxic behaviors)

The New Girl

by Jesse Q. Sutanto

Lia Setiawan has never really fit in. When she wins a full ride to the prestigious Draycott Academy on a track scholarship, she’s determined to make it work even though she’s never felt more out of place. But on her first day there she witnesses a girl being forcefully carried away by campus security. Her new schoolmates and teachers seem unfazed, but it leaves her unsure of what she’s gotten herself into. As she uncovers the secrets of Draycott, complete with a corrupt teacher, a golden boy who isn’t what he seems, and a blackmailer determined to get her thrown out, she’s not sure if she can trust anyone–especially when the threats against her take a deadly turn.

𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐞: ARC, Thriller, YA
𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐬: Bullying, Death, Drug Abuse, Drug use, Gore, Murder, Panic attacks/disorders, Racial slurs, Racism, Violence, Xenophobia
𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 (A bit frustrating when the character does stupid things but is incredibly written, with deep subjects and an extremely riveting plot.)

These are all the books I read in January 2022! Have you read any of them? Let me know the books you’ve read and what you thought about them!

Well, that is all for today, I hope you like this post, hope you enjoy these books if you decide to read them. Feel free to leave your opinion about it in the comments and I will see you next time!

Bye sassy people!

  • I know that some comments I make about decent guys on my posts are the bare minimum a guy should do, so no, they don’t deserve to be treated like gods for doing the minimum, but at the same time, I’ve read a lot of sexist books and I appreciate authors who make characters that can serve as role models and examples of how a decent guy acts and what a loving and respectful relationship looks like. I believe we should always encourage these authors and bring attention to the ones that still write sexist characters and stories.
  • I make a lot of comments about sexism and healthy role models in books, but a lot of times these characteristics don’t make the book a bad book and definitely don’t make the author a bad author. Please never shame these authors and these books for these comments, I simply feel that we need to have awareness of the less than ideal situations some books bring us, and not use the romanticized problem as examples of what a relationship should be. Most of these authors are still amazing, and the content they write doesn’t reflect directly with their personal views and opinions. Always make sure to respect and be kind to everyone, even while criticizing their content.
