Escaping Christmas by Marie Landry

A London Villain

by Catherine Wiltcher

The devil dances in his veins…
From USA Today bestselling author, Catherine Wiltcher, comes a new dark mafia romance about second chances and enduring love.
It started with a dare:
Steal a kiss from the pretty, green-eyed girl with the Irish mobster father.
Turns out, Ada O’Sullivan was a much better thief than me.
In the span of one night, I lost my head, my senses, my loyalty to my own crime family…
At nineteen, she was the only thing worth fighting for.
Dying for.
Loving.
But I was a boy playing a man’s game.
In the end, they drove me from this city, while Ada was driven straight to hell.
Now, I’m back—an avenging devil—with red hands and loaded bullets.
Irish. Mafia. Bratva. British.
Everyone who tore her from my arms, everyone who has ever hurt her, will suffer the consequences.
But time bleeds secrets.
Secrets open old wounds.
Ada isn’t the same sweet girl I knew before they ripped her innocence apart.
And that boy?
I’ve turned him into a villain who will stop at nothing to make her mine again.
A London Villain is a heart-stopping, second chance romance with NO cliff-hanger and a guaranteed HEA.
For mature readers only.

My Rate: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5

The writing is so amazing! Almost poetic. I absolutely loved Catherine’s writing and I’m definitely reading more of her books. Now, this was also very heavy. This book is not for the weak of heart. If you have ANY triggers, do not read them.

Frankie is a bit too authoritarian at times, too much for my taste.

Now I did have a few problems:

  1. It was unclear to me what Frankie did before going to jail. Why did he spend 14 years away from Ada?
  2. He talks about having to choose between love and revenge. But you would “let” your soulmate be raped and abused for 14 years, because of revenge?
  3. The title and the beginning of the book talk about Frankie as someone who is “A London Villain” he is going to be the new capo of London, he is powerful and strong. But I didn’t see that in him during the book. He was very reckless, making rash decisions, doing things unplanned, doing honestly stupid things. So it’s hard for me to believe in the success and ruthlessness of this man. He is not a bad character, but he is not a capo. Or at least not one that would last very long. And he depends on Santiago a lot. He is afraid of him and dependent on him, which also takes away his authority. He honestly feels like a teenager still, during the whole book.

Equality rate: ⭐⭐ 2/5

This book gets a very low rating. Frankie is borderline abusive in my eyes. I used my checklist of negative behaviors (based on the National Domestic Violence hotline) and here are all the red flags I recognized:

Aggressive behavior, Controlling issues, Dangerous power dynamics, Dominating decision-making process, Insta love, Love interest believes in rigid gender roles, No Communication, No explicit consent, Possessiveness, Sexism, Stalking, The main character is viewed as an object, Unprotected sex (consensual or non-consensual)

The part that most annoys me is that EVERY SINGLE TIME THESE TWO PEOPLE SAW EACH OTHER FOR LONGER THEN 5 MINUTES THEY WERE F*****. This is not a relationship. They don’t know each other because they haven’t had ONE decent conversation in 21 years (all the time that they’ve known each other). So ultimately, this is not exactly a couple I believe in, because I haven’t seen them have a relationship. They never had a conversation.

Now, their connection is undeniable. They are connected because of their trauma, the people who hurt them, and because they used each other as motivation to survive.

Now, that is not enough for a healthy relationship.

And it annoyed me that Frankie hasn’t talked to “the love of his life” in 14 years, and he can only think with his d***. EVERY TIME! No matter if her knees are hurt and she was almost raped by her husband, or if he just received horrible news. He only thinks about sex, and that to me is not a mature and healthy relationship.

Now, I’m not saying they can’t have one. They can build it, but I didn’t see it on the page.

That was one of the things that made me give this book 4 stars.

The other was: Some of the violence felt too much or unnecessary. Ada is almost raped at least 4 times, if not more, on-page. I really don’t think that was necessary. We already understood that she suffered, and it gets to a point where you question if those scenes are just there for shock value.

I’m a person who has very few triggers, and this was not triggering for me, but it was unpleasant in a lot of moments, to read so much violence and horror all the time.

I ultimately loved the book, despite all the issues I found, I enjoyed reading it really much.

Adjectives and general thoughts: Amazing writing and worldbuilding, but with very serious problems in the Equality Rate

Well, that is all for today, I hope you like this post, hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. Feel free to leave your opinion about it in the comments and I will see you next time!

Bye sassy people!

  • I know that some comments I make about decent guys on my posts are the bare minimum a guy should do, so no, they don’t deserve to be treated like gods for doing the minimum, but at the same time, I’ve read a lot of sexist books and I appreciate authors who make characters that can serve as role models and examples of how a decent guy acts and what a loving and respectful relationship looks like. I believe we should always encourage these authors and bring attention to the ones that still write sexist characters and stories.
  • I make a lot of comments about sexism and healthy role models in books, but a lot of times these characteristics don’t make the book a bad book and definitely don’t make the author a bad author. Please never shame these authors and these books for these comments, I simply feel that we need to have awareness of the less than ideal situations some books bring us, and not use the romanticized problem as examples of what a relationship should be. Most of these authors are still amazing, and the content they write doesn’t reflect directly with their personal views and opinions. Always make sure to respect and be kind to everyone, even while criticizing their content.

Escaping Christmas by Marie Landry

Broken King

(Restless Kings #2)

by Bella Matthews

One night.
I let myself have one night with him after avoiding him for years.
But one night was all it took for history to repeat itself.
Cade St. James was my past. He was the boy who stole my heart before he left for the Marine Corps. Now he’s back in Kroydon Hills, and there’s no mistaking he’s all man. A former MMA champion, running his own gym, and taking care of his adorable little girl. And I have to tell him our one night together is going to make him a father again.
Our timing has always been wrong.
I can do this on my own if I have to.
I don’t need to be saved.
I’m a King, not a princess.
I can save my own damn self.
Scarlet Kingston has always been too good for me.
She’s also always been mine.
But now, I don’t only have myself to think about. I have my daughter too.
We’ve both been burned before. And trusting another woman, especially one who’s already broken my heart, won’t be easy. But nothing with Scarlet ever was.
As a vice president of the Philadelphia Kings, grown men fear her.
And Scarlet wouldn’t have it any other way.
This woman can wear as cold of an exterior as she wants, but I’ve felt her on the inside.
She’s no ice queen.
Can we both get past the hurts from the past and live in the present?
Or are we both just Broken?

My Rate: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5

The writing is not the best I’ve ever read, but the story is so good that you get over that. I love big families, I love surprise baby and pregnancy books. I love women in sports and driven women who want it all and especially women in high management jobs. So this book hits a lot of sweet spots for me.

And the whole plot and story were very good, it hooked me from the beginning.

One small part I didn’t like was the biggest conflict of the book, that is Cade’s ex. The whole situation gets dissolved so fast and easy, you even kinda forget that it was there. The whole book is more focused on character growth and development, and the conflict gets a back seat, seems like it’s there more to follow a structure than to make any real difference to the story.

Equality rate: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5

I love the entire aspect of “Can I have it all? Can I be a successful business woman and also a good mom at the same time? Can I have drive and ambition, but still want a family?” (not a direct quote)

I just loved Scarlet’s journey, her attitude, her drive, and her growth and how her family helped her, how they supported her in her goals and took care of her.

I also love a single dad with a cute kid, so we had that here!

Again, this book hit all my sweet spots and it was delightful to read!

My Rate: ⭐⭐ 2/5 (This may sound harsh, but my rate is based on the quality of writing. This book was written in the third person, which made it harder and more confusing to read, being that 99,9% of the books I read are first-person (but that is just a personal preference). Also, I don’t know how else to describe this, if not by saying that it was stiff. I didn’t see much depth or emotion. And the plot was a bit weak for me. The major conflict was not major enough, in my opinion.

It made me sad, because this book had a lot of my favorite tropes, but it just didn’t live up to my expectations.)

Equality rate: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 (It is honestly neutral. I like the widow point of view, I always like books like that. However, it was just not deep enough for me and I didn’t enjoy reading it much.)

Adjectives and general thoughts: Had a good premise, but the execution wasn’t good enough.

TW According to the author: This story contains subject matters some may find triggering, including child abuse and grooming. This book is not meant to make you feel comfortable and fuzzy inside. Please take this into consideration before starting it.

This was the best book I have ever read by L.J. Shen, and I’ve read many of them. This had the perfect balance between sweet, heavy, complicated, and delicious.

The author is a very good writer, and the way she built her characters in this book was amazing. They feel multilayered. They feel like real people, with real feelings and even more real pasts. And that is one thing I love about this author, how deep her character development is.

I LOVE Devon and his personality. He manages to be closed off and private, while also being funny and sarcastic, and not grumpy. I expected him to be super grumpy because of the prologue, but he has an amazing sense of humor and I love how he aligns with Belle and her sense of humor. Their private jokes and games are delightful and they deepen their relationship and connection, in the eyes of the reader.

And I love Belle, being strong, powerful, and stubborn, but also learning how to be vulnerable. I have to say that sometimes (actually many times), she makes dumb decisions, but I love that she is like that, wants to be the person to solve all her problems by herself.

The plot was a mix of action and character evolution and I always appreciate that, and all the mystery and plot twists made this reading experience even better.

This book brings up very important and heavy topics, such as Child Abuse, Miscarriage, Sexual Abuse/Rape, Infertility, and Grooming. I truly believe these are important subjects that need to be talked about, not only in romance but everywhere.

To me, the most important part seems to be the Grooming narrative. The signs, the internal battle, the consequences. I had never read a book with this TW and it was mind-opening to see some things that might happen with girls and boys everywhere, but we don’t hear about it.

This book had many positive aspects like talking about Mental Health, Independence, Gender Roles, and Trauma.

My favorite parts of this book (and any book that deals with trauma survivors) are the reactions and reflections of the main characters to their trauma. Devon becomes claustrophobic, Belle has massive trust issues. I love how deep the author takes us into their mental health and their trauma.

I also love how independent she makes Belle, how “modern” their arrangement is, how mature and bold these two need to be, to admit and take action on the fact that they both want a child. (The fact that Devon really wants a baby makes me love him even more).

I love how they challenge gender roles by co-parenting (even if we all know that they will end up together), and how Belle is a powerful woman, with her own business and her own success, with no shame about her sexuality and she won’t give that up to be a mom.

Now, there are a few red flags here, that need to be addressed.

Like jealousy, from both sides, but especially Belle’s.

No communication between the couple.

How Devon tracks Belle down at some points of the book and forces her to have a bodyguard, without her permission (I know that it is to protect her, but it is still not great behavior)

And last, but definitely not least, how Devon is “cured” of his claustrophobia because of Belle and their baby. I kinda hate the narrative that the heroine is going to “heal” the hero, so I could be without that little tidbit.

But overall an amazing book, with very important and heavy topics, that I absolutely love.

Adjectives and general thoughts: Heavy and angsty, but that is L.J. Shen. But it was surprisingly not angsty between the couple and I loved that, they are fairly honest with each other and I appreciate that.

Recommend this to people who have no Triggers, who enjoy a book that is heavy but delicious. And if you’ve read a book by L.J. Shen, you already know what to expect, in terms of angst.

Hello sassy people! Today I’m going to tell you guys about all the books I read in February! It was a very busy and messy month, full of delayed ARC review deliveries and disappointing books!

Welcome to the Dark Side

(The Fallen Men #2)

by Giana Darling

I was a good girl.
I ate my vegetables, volunteered at the local autism center, and sat in the front pew of church every Sunday.
Then, I got cancer.
What the hell kind of reward was that for a boring life well lived?
I was a seventeen-year-old paradigm of virtue and I was tired of it.
So, when I finally ran into the man I’d been writing to since he saved my life as a little girl and he offered to show me the dark side of life before I left it for good, I said yes.
Only, I didn’t know that Zeus Garro was the President of The Fallen MC and when you made a deal with a man who is worse than the devil, there was no going back…
This is Daddy Zeus Garro’s story from Lessons In Corruption. A standalone in The Fallen Men series.

𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: Age Gap Romance, Forbidden/Taboo, Motorcycle/MC, Secret Relationship, Single Parent, Small Town Romance
𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)
𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞: 3/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️
𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 (Awesome book, awesome writing, some moments where the Heroine was just plain stupid and some moments where the author just wanted to make us suffer)
𝐌𝐲 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 (Consent, for me, is a bit blurred here, especially because of difference in age, the fact that she is not legal yet (and needs a signature from her mom, to be able to marry him), but also, again, rigid gender rules)

Am I Allergic to Men?

(The Callaghan Sisters #5)

by Kristen Bailey

You think you’ve got it bad? I lost my memory, I’m so single I’ve basically got an allergy to men, and my own cat despises me.
‘Lucy! If you can hear me, squeeze my hand!’
That’s the first thing I hear when I wake up in hospital. Then my sister drops a bombshell: I’ve been in a coma.
It gets worse. In my head, it’s 2009 and I’m seventeen. Somehow, I need to remember the last decade…
Plan A: Track down my exes. Highlights include a one-night stand with someone in a Batman costume, and balcony sex that gave the neighbors a nervous breakdown.
Plan B: Get flirty. Lowlights include a fling with someone hairier than a yeti.
Plan C: Figure out why I have more exes than underwear. Am I allergic to men?
As I piece together my past, I find a mysterious note: Oscar, 9th February. Determined to work out what it means, I uncover a secret I’ve been hiding from everyone.
When the truth comes out, will my memory return? Will I get my life back? And will I ever find the cure to my singledom?
You’ll laugh so much your abs ache! The perfect page-turner for fans of Sophie Kinsella, Lindsey Kelk, and TV shows like Schitt’s Creek.

𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐞: ARC, Audiobook, Fiction, Women’s Fiction

𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 (This book is about a fascinating, hilarious and interesting journey, into finding out “How did I get here?”)

My audiobook rate: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 (The narration was a bit confusing)

Deviant Princess

(Knight’s Ridge Empire #5)

by Tracy Lorraine

USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Tracy Lorraine brings you the next installment of her new dark mafia, high school bully romance series.
I should have known better than to play with fire…
I’d been burned by Theo Cirillo enough to know that I should have seen this coming.
He loved to show me his merciless side, but I couldn’t stay away from the deviant even if I wanted to.
A prisoner of my own making, playing a game without knowing all the rules. Until the lies he’d been telling, the secrets he’d been keeping began to unravel around us.
He’s the only person I trusted with the truth about my past, but my confession was all for nothing.
He never cared. He already knew.
He was only manipulating me.
Using me.
I was nothing more than a job. A nut he had to crack.
And he split me right open, but he’s about to get a shock because I’m not the kind of girl to roll over and take it.
I’m Emmie Ramsey.
And I’m about to make him pay for ever trying to play me.
Dear reader,
Deviant Princess is the second book in Emmie and Theo’s deviant trilogy and the fifth book in my dark mafia, high school romance series Knight’s Ridge Empire.

Small Town Big Rumors: The Tequila Rose Duet

by Willow Winters

He tasted like tequila and the fake name I gave him was Rose.
Four years ago, I decided to get over one man, by getting under another. A single night and nothing more.
I found my handsome stranger with a shot glass and charming but devilish smile at the end of the bar. The desire that hit his eyes the second they landed on me ignited a spark inside me, instant and hot. He was perfect and everything I didn’t know I needed. That one night may have ended, but I left with much more than a memory.
Four years later, and with a three-year-old in tow, the man I still dream about is staring at me from across the street in the town I grew up in. I don’t miss the flash of recognition, or the heat in his gaze.
The chemistry is still there, even after all these years.
I just hope the secrets and regrets don’t destroy our second chance before it’s even begun.

This author is now on my No Buy list (list of authors whose morals don’t align with mine)

𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: Love Triangle, Second chance romance, Single Parent, Small Town Romance, Surprise Baby, Surprise pregnancy

𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)

𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞: 3/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️

𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 (Really good writing, the first Love Triangle I actually enjoyed)

𝐌𝐲 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 (Quote: “I am a strong woman, and I’m raising a strong woman as well. I am worthy and I am doing better with every day. Now I’ve added: I might be in love with two men, and that’s okay”)

The Rake

(Boston Belles #4)

by L.J. Shen

Boston’s most infamous femme fatale meets her match in a dangerously mild Englishman who has vowed to never marry in this romantic standalone from Washington Post bestselling author L.J. Shen
Emmabelle Penrose has cruised through life never needing a man, a plan that has worked stunningly well until about five minutes ago, when she decided she must have a baby.
Devon Whitehall is 6’2” of premium DNA, financial security, and British royal titles. Best of all, he fears the one thing she dreads the most: getting hitched.
Emmabelle figures it’s a no-brainer when Devon offers his services—sperm and involvement in her future child’s life.
What begins as an innocent, modern-family arrangement, quickly erodes into a web of lies, dark pasts, and unfurled secrets.
Inside this chaos, Emmabelle and Devon are forced to face the awful truth—they are capable of love.
Even worse, they might feel it toward each other.

𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: Billionaire Romance, Pregnancy, Royal Romance
𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 4/5 (steamy)
𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞: 3/5 🌶️🌶️🌶️

Escaping Christmas by Marie Landry

Tackled: A Football RomCom

(Chesapeake Commanders #3)

by Lizzi Stone

No good deed goes unpunished…
Especially for Bam, a football player arrested for a bar fight. Never mind that he was defending someone. That doesn’t matter; all that matters is that he is a big, brawny football player. Even the owner of the team he plays for doesn’t care.
His image needs some serious work.
That’s where I come in. I’m a publicist assigned to help his public reputation. To say the two of us don’t get along— That’s an understatement.
I make it clear that I only need one thing from him: do as he’s told and show up when I tell him to.
Simple.
The one speaking engagement I get him, a huge honor, he doesn’t even show up, and now my job is on the line.
Can the two of us set the record straight? And, as we get closer, will we find that our jobs aren’t the only things on the line, but our hearts as well?

My Rate: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 (As in other books by this author, this book had a very interesting premise, publicist helps football star get back on the good side of the media. But the execution was a bit poor. For me, the most important part of a romance is the reason why this couple can’t be together from moment one, and in here, for most of the book, this reason didn’t exist. They had a very shallow relationship, the whole conflict was a bit weak. And last but not least the dialogue was weak too. It was stiff, without emotion or dept. There was no chemistry, and things happened a bit suddenly. I honestly don’t believe in this couple. They are just two random people, who have to work together.

Equality rate: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 (From the Equality rate standpoint this book was very neutral. Nothing horrible, but nothing amazing either. I just have that I didn’t like this hero. He is uncooperative and shallow, with a huge ego, that didn’t please me.)

Adjectives and general thoughts: Had a good premise, but the execution wasn’t good enough.

Well, that is all for today, I hope you like this post. Feel free to leave your opinion about the book in the comments and I will see you next time!

Brutal Prince

(Brutal Birthright #1)

by Sophie Lark

Callum Griffin is the heir to the Irish Mafia. He’s ruthless, arrogant, and he wants to kill me.
We got off on the wrong foot when I set a (very small) fire in his house.
Our families believe a marriage pact is the only thing that will prevent all-out warfare.
I think I might need to murder him while he sleeps.
This would all be a lot easier if Callum wasn’t so damned good-looking.
But I’ve got a lockbox around my heart. Because even if I’m forced to marry him…
I could never love a brutal prince.

Savage Lover

(Brutal Birthright #3)

by Sophie Lark

There’s A Reason I Never Go To Parties…
I saw him in a cloud of smoke, like sin made flesh. Even bruised and battered, I’d never seen anything more beautiful…
Unless I hate myself, I should stay far away from Nero.
He’s a heartbreaker.
A mess-maker.
A walking disaster.
Here’s the problem: I’m in deep trouble with a dirty cop. The only person who can save me is Nero. We’re not friends. If he saw me drowning, he’d throw me an anchor.
But he’s the only chance I’ve got.
He’s no hero, he’s a Savage Lover.

Put Me in Detention

by Meghan Quinn

“You got married on your divorce-cation?”
That would unfortunately be correct.
I was hanging with the girls, celebrating my divorce when I saw him, my crush, sitting in the corner of the bar all alone. Being single and looking for a wild night, I asked him if he wanted to join me. To my delight, he said yes.
Drinks were consumed, fun was had and then . . . one drunken conversation with a cranky gondolier in Las Vegas led to an Uber lift through a drive-thru wedding chapel with the incredibly hot, British bad boy, Pike Greyson.
On paper, it seemed like I hit the jackpot. And if I wasn’t fresh from a toxic marriage, I would have absolutely noticed the finer things about him.
But I wanted nothing to do with being married, so when I arrived back home from my eventful weekend in Vegas, the last thing I expected to see was a new doting husband already moved in.
I asked for an annulment, he pulled a Ross Geller and said no.
That’s right, he said NO! Instead, he asked for three months to prove we could be good together.
Insanity clearly knocked him in the head and the only way I could convince him to give up on our sham of a marriage was to show him just how wrong we were for each other. Only problem with that was, he saw right through my every prank, every trick, and every yearning emotion I attempted to mask.

Cream and Punishment

(King Family #2)

by Susannah Nix

She’s not just my ex-girlfriend. She’s my new coworker.
I knew Lucy Dillard was The One the first time I met her. Yes, I’m enough of a sap to believe in love at first sight. When I fell for Lucy, I fell hard. Everything was great between us—until the moment she dumped me.
Now I just want to forget about her. Instead, I’m stuck staring at her face all day. But I need this job, so I’ll find a way to be civil and professional.
There’s just one small problem: I’m nowhere close to being over her.
First, we were lovers. Then enemies. Now we’re trying to be friends.
I didn’t set out to break Tanner King’s heart, but you know what they say about the road to hell.
I’ve got too many responsibilities and no room in my life for love. I can deal with Tanner’s resentment until he starts working at the desk directly across from mine. Obviously, a truce of some kind is required. We’re both grownups. We can handle this situation like professionals.
There’s only one thing threatening this fragile peace we’ve negotiated: all these inconvenient feelings I apparently still have for him.

Make Me Dream

by Dillon Bancroft

Aria
They say snitches get stitches. Except I got all the stitches before I ever thought about trying to snitch. My abusive ex-boyfriend, one of the most powerful men in the country, is on the hunt for my silence. He’ll stop at nothing to make sure I’m six feet under for ratting him out to the FBI.
To make matters worse, I’m pregnant . . . with his baby. So why do I want to fall in bed with the sexy veterinarian who lives two doors down from me on the family farm? I can’t resist starting a no-strings attachment with the hot, single dad who doesn’t do forever. But it can’t be more than that. I’m on borrowed time. Forever will get us both killed.
Derek
The prodigal daughter returns to Sage Creek and I want to send her anywhere but here. I don’t need her brand of drama lurking around. Especially when I have a daughter I’m fighting to get sole custody of. But when my brother from another mother becomes her witness protection and brings her to the farm I work at, I’m forced to help keep Aria safe.
Her past is messy, and it most certainly gives me a headache I wasn’t looking for. I don’t do promises and happily ever afters. So why am I considering giving everything and more to Aria McKenzie when she strolls back into the barns of Sage Creek with a black eye, battered and broken?

Josh and Gemma Make a Baby

by Sarah Ready

New Year’s Resolution:
Have a baby
Preferably with Josh Lewenthal
Meet Gemma Jacobs. She’s driven, energetic, and a positive thinker. She has a great career working for famed self-help guru Ian Fortune, she lives in a cute studio apartment in Manhattan, and her family is supportive and loving (albeit a little kooky). Her life is perfect. Absolutely wonderful.
Except for one tiny little thing.
After a decade of disastrous relationships and an infertility diagnosis, Gemma doesn’t want a Mr. Right (or even a Mr. Right Now), she just wants a baby.
And all she needs is an egg, some sperm, and IVF.
So Gemma makes a New Year’s resolution: have a baby.
Josh Lewenthal is a laid back, relaxed, find-the-humor-in-life kind of guy. The polar opposite of Gemma. He’s also her brother’s best friend. For the past twenty years Josh has attended every Jacobs’ family birthday, holiday, and event – he’s always around.
Gemma knows him. He’s nice (enough), he’s funny (-ish), he’s healthy (she thinks) and he didn’t burn any ants with a magnifying glass as a kid. Which, in Gemma’s mind, makes him the perfect option for a sperm donor.
So Gemma wants to make a deal. An unemotional, businesslike arrangement. No commitments, just a baby.
To Gemma’s surprise, Josh agrees.
They have nothing in common, except their agreement to make a baby and their desire to keep things businesslike.
But the thing about baby-making…it’s hard to keep it businesslike, it’s nearly impossible to keep it unemotional, and it’s definitely impossible to keep your heart out of the mix. Because when you’re making a baby together, things have a way of starting to feel like you’re making other things too – like a life, and a family, and love. And when the baby-making ends, you wish that everything else didn’t have to end too.

Lockdown on London Lane

by Beth Reekles

For the inhabitants of London Lane, a simple slip of paper underneath each of their doors is about to change their lives in a hundred different ways.
URGENT!!! Due to the current situation, building management has decided to impose a seven-day quarantine on all apartment buildings on London Lane.
With nowhere else to go . . .
Ethan and Charlotte wonder whether absence really does make the heart grow fonder when they end up on either side of a locked door.
A fierce debate over pineapple on pizza ignites a series of revelations about Zach and Serena’s four-year relationship.
Liv realizes rolling with the punches is sometimes much harder than it looks after her bridesmaids’ party goes off the rails, leaving the group at each other’s throats.
Isla and Danny’s new romance is put to the test as they jump ten steps ahead on the relationship timeline.
And Imogen and Nate’s one-night stand is about to get six do-overs they never really asked for—not awkward at all.
Through make ups, breakups, love-ins, and blowouts, friendships are tested as everyone scrambles to make it through the week unscathed. Amidst all the drama, one thing remains constant: life is full of surprises.

Group Therapy

by B.B. Easton

I am thiiiiis close to finally becoming a full-fledged psychologist. PhD? Check. Prestigious postdoc position, providing therapy to entitled millionaires and C-list celebrities whose pumpkin spice lattes cost more than my Converse and make excellent projectiles during their reality TV–worthy tantrums? Check. Letter of recommendation from my velociraptor-like supervisor?
That’s going to take a miracle. Not only because my boss said I have to cure our most-prized client’s writer’s block in time for him to meet his insane deadline, but also because that client just so happens to be …
Thomas F*@%ing O’Reardon.
Yeah, that Thomas O’Reardon. The wickedly brilliant, achingly beautiful, devastatingly British best-selling author whose psychological thrillers line my bookshelf at home and whose face I might or might not picture while I … you get the point. Sitting in a confined space with him; inhaling the crisp, clean scent of his cologne; gazing into his broody blue eyes while trying to remember to nod and listen and come up with suggestions that don’t involve taking our clothes off … it’s torture.
So, when Thomas casually asks me out at the end of a therapy session, I’m forced to make an impossible choice: say yes and risk losing my dream job, or say no and risk losing my dream guy. In a panic, I blurt out a third option—the only solution I can think of that will allow me to see this man after hours without it being considered a career-ending ethics violation:
Group therapy.
The only problem? I’ve never actually done group therapy. And side problem: my other clients are heathens. But what’s the worst that could happen? I mean, it’s not like I’m going to lose all control of the group and let it devolve into a chaotic, bloodthirsty, topless fight club.
Right?

𝐑𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: Forbidden relationship, Psychologist-client, Rom-Com

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐬: No content Warnings According to StoryGraph
𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 (this book manages to use heavy subjects lightly, using humor to talk about very important things)
𝐌𝐲 Equality 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 (this can not be used as an example of what therapy is like, however, I do believe that this book brings a lot of very useful advice and insight to mental health in a very fun and entertaining way)

The Guest Room

by Rona Halsall

You think you’re safe in your home. You’re wrong.
Ever since Steph’s husband walked out after a thirty-year marriage, home hasn’t felt like a safe haven. Her daughter Bea thinks she’s imagining things. But Steph knows that the noises in the night, the open windows she knows she left closed, the strange smell in the kitchen – none of it feels right.
Then her house is broken into, and a young man named Noah helps her fix the front window. He’s fallen on hard times and Steph impulsively offers him a place to stay. At least if he is there, she won’t be home alone.
Before long Noah is living in Bea’s old bedroom, paying rent, and getting his life back on track. Steph’s ex-husband and Bea are furious. But Steph feels secure at last.
Until the strange things start happening once more.
Until it becomes clear someone will stop at nothing to make her never, ever feel safe again.

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐬: Bullying, Drug use, Fire/Fire injury, Gaslighting, Toxic relationship
𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 This book has an interesting premise, however, it was a bit slow on the delivery. It felt like the author just filled the first 70% of the book with random characters, situations, and flashbacks to give us other suspects but most of it was a bit unnecessary and only slowed the story down for me. The ending was good, the plot twist was not as surprising as I wished it was, but the ending was enjoyable and with a really good motivation. The narration was one of the best I’ve ever heard!

The New Girl

by Jesse Q. Sutanto

Lia Setiawan has never really fit in. When she wins a full ride to the prestigious Draycott Academy on a track scholarship, she’s determined to make it work even though she’s never felt more out of place. But on her first day there she witnesses a girl being forcefully carried away by campus security. Her new schoolmates and teachers seem unfazed, but it leaves her unsure of what she’s gotten herself into. As she uncovers the secrets of Draycott, complete with a corrupt teacher, a golden boy who isn’t what he seems, and a blackmailer determined to get her thrown out, she’s not sure if she can trust anyone–especially when the threats against her take a deadly turn.

Well, that is all for today, I hope you like this post, hope you enjoy these books if you decide to read them.

Jenn

Marriage and Murder

(Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries #2)

by Penny Reid

The Devil is in the details . . .
Cletus Byron Winston wishes to marry Jennifer Anne Donner-Sylvester (aka The Banana Cake Queen) posthaste! He’s spent the last year wanting nothing more than for the celebrations to be brief, libations flowing, and BYOB (bring your own blueberries). His future mother-in-law has other plans, plans his intended has been willing to indulge, much to Cletus’s chagrin. Therefore, so must he. To a point. But truth be told, he wouldn’t mind if the meddlesome matriarch disappeared, at least until the nuptials are over.
On the night of Cletus and Jenn’s long-awaited engagement party, just when the surly schemer is of a mind to take matters into his own hands, a shocking event upends everyone’s best laid plans and sends the small hamlet of Green Valley into complete disarray. The final months leading up to Cletus and Jenn’s matrimonial bliss are plagued with chaos and uncertainty. Will Cletus and Jenn finally make it to the altar? Or will murder and mayhem derail their happily-ever-after?
And most importantly, who done it?
‘Marriage and Murder’ is the second book in the cozy mystery series Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries. It is best read after Winston Brothers #3, ‘Beard Science’ (which can be read as a standalone) and Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries #1, ‘Engagement and Espionage.’

Even better, she has absolutely no idea who I am.

Milly

The Dugout

(The Brentwood Boys #2)

by Meghan Quinn

Let me ask you a question:
If someone is vying for your spot on a team and just so happens to injure you during practice, would you believe it was on purpose?
Word around campus is . . . it was no accident.
That injury has cost me everything; my starting position, my junior year—and the draft. Now, I’m a senior fresh off recovery, struggling to find my groove, until the day I run into a nervous, fidgety, girl with freckles, in the dining hall.
They call Milly Potter The Baseball Whisperer, The Diamond Wizard, and The Epitome of All Knowledge. She believes in baseball. She breathes it. She’s the queen of an infamous dynasty, but no one actually knows who she really is, and she plans to keep it that way.
One mishap in the panini line, one miscommunication in the weight room, and many failed attempts at an apology equal up to one solid truth — Milly Potter never wants to speak to me again — no matter how good my forearms look.
Little do we both know, she’s about to become more than just my fairy ballmother.

Hannah

The Deal

(Off-Campus #1)

by Elle Kennedy

She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy…
Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice… even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.
…and it’s going to be oh so good.
All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.

Lucy

Highlights include a one-night stand with someone in a Batman costume, and balcony sex that gave the neighbours a nervous breakdown.
The perfect page-turner for fans of Sophie Kinsella, Lindsey Kelk and TV shows like Schitt’s Creek.

These are my favorite heroines at the moment! Have you read any of them? Let me know the books you’ve read and what you thought about them!

Well, that is all for today, I hope you like this post, hope you enjoy these books if you decide to read them.

Hello sassy people! Today’s post is about The Last Eligible Billionaire by Pippa Grant! Thank you, Pippa Grant and Give Me Books PR for providing this copy in exchange for an honest review!

Escaping Christmas by Marie Landry

The Last Eligible Billionaire

by Pippa Grant

Emotionally unavailable doesn’t even begin to describe my new fake boyfriend. He’s cold. He’s distant. He has more defenses than a nuclear missile silo. And he’s the ultimate catch of the century. At least, according to his bank statement.
My job’s simple: Keep Hayes Rutherford’s matchmaking relatives and all interested ladies away from the cranky, grumpy, walled-off heir to my favorite movie empire, and in return, he won’t ruin my life over a teensy, tiny little misunderstanding.
But the more I sneak past Hayes’s walls and fences, the more I realize that while we might be from different worlds, we have more in common than either of us expected. The man under all the glitz, glamour, and dollar signs could be the real love of my life.
But you know what they say about fake dating a billionaire—it’s all fun and games until the scandals start.
The Last Eligible Billionaire is a swoony, laugh-out-loud romance featuring a botched wax job, a woman in over her head, a man in over his heart, and the sweetest misguided dog to ever play matchmaker…or at least make sure these two anti-love birds never have clothes when they get out of the shower.
A new stand-alone romantic comedy from Pippa Grant.

My Rate: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5

As always, Pippa’s writing was amazing, funny, sweet and it hooked me from page 1, while also making me laugh out loud. And what I always trust to find in her stories is a very good, very deep character development. We know and understand the motivation of every single character in the book, while also having very unique and quirky personalities, that are just amazing.

One very small aspect I didn’t love was the main conflict. I believe it to be a kind of a cliche to have a hero who is emotionally incapable of saying that he loves the heroine and having his parents say “I saw how you looked at her”. However, I do believe that Pippa brought some innovation to this cliche, by making the word love not to be enough, and making the heroine a very strong woman who is not going to settle and is not going to be with someone who can’t love them the way they deserve.

It gets extra points in my score because:

1- Begonia sleeps on the floor on the first night, and not Hayes, which was a very cool way to break a cliche.

2- She mentions Brazilian food correctly! And she is right, the foods she talked about are delicious: Picanha, Pão de Queijo, and fried bananas… 😋

Equality rate: ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5

The book brings a lot of mental health and emotional trauma to the table. We have very mature conversations and thoughts about consent, and making intentions clear, however, they don’t talk about feelings and their communication about important things is very lacking.

I love that Pippa’s main narrative in a lot of her books is being yourself, accepting yourself, and finding someone who loves you for who you are, which may seem like a cliche, but is a very important narrative. And I love how strong she made Begonia, in her journey for independence and acceptance of herself.

However, I thought the whole premise of “The Last Single Billionaire in the world” was a bit absurd, and not entirely necessary. I did enjoy the comment “And he’s not, for the record. There are like, three single women billionaires who are in their thirties and forties, and is anyone talking about them? No. Fucking two-faced twats.” This is a nice sentiment, but I don’t love that the whole world, in this book, is concerned with this one single billionaire guy, like do people really care about this? I hope not.

But I did understand her premise, Begonia doesn’t care about his money, and I appreciate that even if she doesn’t care, she accepts what he offers her, that is a much more realistic stand, like who doesn’t love gifts?

I just thought that his money, and especially the fact that he blackmailed her into their agreement, made their power dynamic a bit dangerous in my eyes. Nothing super alarming, but not the most awesome way to start things.

And last but not least, they fall in love incredibly quickly and I don’t love that. I think they could have been together for longer than 2 weeks before they fell in love.

So overall, from an Equality rate standpoint, this book has some positive points, some negative points, but overall is very neutral.

Adjectives and general thoughts: Funny and sweet, with the signature quirkiness of Pippa Grant’s characters

Recommend this to People who like a rom-com with well-developed characters. Readers of Meghan Quinn and Sally Thorne are likely to enjoy this one.

Explaining my reviewing process

Explaining my reviewing process

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!!

This post may contain affiliate links for products and services I recommend. If you make a purchase through these links, at no additional cost to you, I will earn a small commission.

Hello sassy people!
Today I’m going to tell you guys a little bit about my reviewing process. I changed it up a bit last year and now I’m changing it a bit more, due to the last big mess on booktok and bookstagram.

My system is pretty much a Notion spreadsheet, where I put all the important information about the book, and I fill it in during and after the read. This means I don’t forget the most important parts and it makes it easier to categorize this book according to trope, profession, type of hero, or any other information I find important. It’s especially easier to make lists and trope Tuesdays (that I intend to start doing at some point)
These are some screenshots of my Notion spreadsheet.

Now here are some of the categories and some of the acronyms I use:

* I don’t support cancel culture. Having a “banned” list and a “no buy” list is not about canceling someone, especially because I won’t divulge the authors who are on these lists. This is about doing what I believe is correct. I won’t judge anyone who chooses to continue reading some of these authors. You do what is best for you. This is what I believe to be best for me, at the moment.

The POP concept was created by the beautiful ladies from @buzzingaboutromance

Some of these definitions came from @allinwitha and her amazing posts about definitions.
